Description:

This Mother of Pearl shell necklace feels like a small treasure brought home from an ancient voyage. I created the necklace using tan and brown cord whose weathered, earthy colors remind me of the ropes and rigging of old wooden sailing ships. At its center hangs a large luminous Mother of Pearl shell, which I surrounded with delicate purple and black micromacramé leaves. The contrast between the rugged, rope-like colors and the shimmering shell gives the necklace an adventurous character while still feeling elegant and feminine.

Mother of Pearl, also known as nacre, is the iridescent material that forms the inner layer of certain mollusk shells. It is built from microscopic layers of calcium carbonate and organic material, and the interaction of light with these incredibly fine layers creates its characteristic pearlescent glow. In spiritual traditions, Mother of Pearl is often associated with intuition, emotional balance, protection, and a connection to the sea.

At the throat chakra, I placed a natural Serpentine stone, bringing an earthy green mineral element into the ocean-inspired composition. Serpentine refers to a family of magnesium-rich silicate minerals whose colors commonly range from pale yellow-green to deep forest green. It has traditionally been associated with grounding, renewal, and connection with the natural world. I also incorporated glowing Opalite beads for flashes of blue and milky light. Opalite is a beautiful man-made glass rather than a natural opal, but I love the way its shifting colors echo the iridescence of the Mother of Pearl.

Small antique-style brass beads add warmth and an aged quality throughout the design, while the purple and black leaves give the shell an almost enchanted, botanical appearance. I finished the necklace with an adjustable sliding knot and tie system so I can change how it sits against the neckline. The result is a piece of nature inspired jewelry that brings together the ocean, earth, and imagination in one design.

To me, The Mariner's Moon feels like something that could have traveled across oceans inside an old wooden chest: a luminous shell collected on a distant shore, surrounded by weathered rope, strange stones, and memories of places far beyond the horizon. It carries the romance of old sailing ships while keeping the free-spirited, organic character I love in my micromacramé work.
